Enchanted Boy |
Enchanted Boy was written by Richie McMullen, one of the founders of Streetwise Youth, now SW5. It was originally published in 1989 by Gay Men's Press and we are grateful for his estate's and publisher's consent to publish it on our website.
Orginal back cover blurb:
Enchanted Boy is the tale of a survivor. In his 'journey through abuse to prostitution', Richie McMullen tells the story of his childhood, growing up in working-class Liverpool in the early postwar years. His account is often harrowing, yet he looks back with a maturity and insight that understands the brutality he experienced at home as the product of a brutal world. And even here, childhood has its irepressible magic, in a world of street gangs, school, and fragile first friendships. As with so many young victims of abuse, prostitution provided Richie with an early escape route from his family. But more fortunate than most, his journey continued - he became a professional youth worker and specialist counsellor to disturbed adolescents, founding the Streetwise project for rent boys [sic] in 1985.
Orginal publisher's interior blurb:
Richie McMullen is now a trained senior youth and community worker with over fifteen years post-qualification experience. He is also a qualified counsellor and is in training as a psychotherapist. In May 1985 he founded the London-based Streetwise Youth Project which was the first youth project in the whole of the United Kingdom to address itself solely to meeting the needs of young people caught up in prostitution. In 1987 he co-founded Survivors, the first male rape support group in the United Kingdom. He has published various papers on youth prostitution and his first book Living With HIV was published by GMP in 1988. He is currently working towards a postgraduate research degree on boy prostitution.
Enchanted Boy will be followed in 1990 by its sequel, Enchanted Youth.
